About this book

A weary rider crosses the desert toward the ranch he left thirteen years earlier, carrying a temper as harsh as the country around him. Calumet Marston returns to his father's Lazy Y with little understanding of what drew him home and with old family grievances still close to the surface. Charles Alden Seltzer's Western novel gives this homecoming a physical setting of dry trails, a river, grazing land and weathered ranch buildings.

A quieter scene finds Calumet reflecting after a card game with Dade and Malcolm. He surveys repairs needed around the ranch, rereads his father's letter and begins to reconsider the bitterness of his youth. These scenes make the book useful to readers interested in Western fiction that follows changes in character alongside the work and tensions of ranch life. The contrast between his angry arrival and his growing sympathy gives the personal conflict a clear place in the story.
