About this book
The Collection of Antiquities is by Honoré de Balzac and is credited as translated by Ellen Marriage. A dedication is addressed to Baron Von Hammer-Purgstall, Member of the Aulic Council, Author of the History of the Ottoman Empire. The dedication speaks of "so warm an interest in my long, vast “History of French Manners in the Nineteenth Century,”" and of "so much encouragement to persevere with my work".
Du Croisier is described as a man to bear a grudge and nurse a vengeance for a score of years, who hated Chesnel and the d’Esgrignon family. The story says that in 1805 M. de la Roche-Guyon made proposals through Maitre Chesnel for Mlle. Marie Armande Clair d’Esgrignon, and that she declined to hear the notary. An examining magistrate puts questions to a banker, who answers them in the affirmative, and the magistrate always brings him back to a "Yes" or "No".
