About this book

The Wreck of the Golden Mary by Charles Dickens has a speaker who says he was apprenticed to the Sea when he was twelve years old and has encountered a great deal of rough weather, both literal and metaphorical. A man addressed as Captain Ravender is met in Leadenhall Street, in the City of London, by someone with a scheme for chartering a new ship to take out cargo to the diggers and emigrants in California, and to buy and bring back gold.

A speaker lists the provisions in his boat as two bags of biscuit, one piece of raw beef, one piece of raw pork, a bag of coffee, roasted but not ground, two small casks of water, and about half-a-gallon of rum. The speaker is begged not to leave, with white faces raised imploringly to his, and answers that he leaves them under the command and the guidance of Mr. William Rames, as good a sailor as he is.
