About this book
The Yellow Horde is a book by Hal G. Evarts, with illustrations by Charles Livingston Bull. Breed, here called the yellow wolf, creeps up on a yearling steer that lagged behind the rest and cuts its hamstrings. Breed circles his kill, looking off in all directions to make sure that there is no route by which men might approach unseen, and sends his tribal call rolling across the range.
Collins is startled by the frenzied entrance of his former pet, and Shady slides to the farthest corner under the wolfer's bunk. Collins grunts with surprise and slams the door shut with but a single second to spare, while one dog rises on his hind feet and savagely rakes the door with its claws. Rumors of a gold strike send men stampeding toward the fabled spot, and the old wolfer follows the last of them.
