About this book
Victorian worthies is a set of sixteen biographies by G. H. Blore. Carlyle's earliest successes, at Annan and at Edinburgh, were in mathematics, and he left the university at the age of nineteen. Kingsley spent infinite time writing friendly letters to Thomas Cooper, the popular writer in Socialist magazines, who preached atheistical doctrines weekly to many thousand working men.
The book also follows Rhodes, who travelled to the scene of action, interviewed Mankoroane, the Bechuana chief, and Van Niekerk, the head of the new settlement, and by sheer personal magnetism persuaded them both to accept British control. An epigraph speaks of discoursing on Great Men, their manner of appearance in our world's business, how they shaped themselves in the world's history, and what work they did.
