About this book

Vittoria, Volume 2, by George Meredith, has a contents list for Book 2 that names chapters, among others, In Verona, The Pope's Mouth and Laura Piaveni. A lieutenant reads lines of a letter as he clatters through the quiet streets toward the Porta Tosa. The letter says the writer cannot consent to see the reader yet and would rather that they should not meet.

The letter says it seems like the writer's past life laughing at the writer that an old friend should have come here in Italy to wear the detestable uniform. The text says war was already raging between the Veronese ladies and the officers of Austria. A count would speak pityingly of the poor depraved intellects which admitted the possibility of a coming Kingdom of Italy united. A woman speaking to Laura says she receives two couriers a week and has been married seventeen months.

About the author
