About this book

Vittoria, Volume 6, by George Meredith, has a contents list for Book 6 that names episodes of the revolt and the war, among others the tobacco riots and the five days of Milan. Lena punished on the spot, and punished herself most, and she broke off her engagement with Wilfrid. Lieutenant Jenna says they shall have plenty of fighting soon, so they will smoke a cordial cigar together.

Countess Ammiani is described as too well used to defeat to believe readily in victory. The voice of Luciano Romara is described as that of an angel's answering. Vittoria still refused to give a man any promise, and on a solitary stretch of the road he appealed to her mercy. Luigi, despatched to reconnoitre from a neighbouring eminence, reported a Piedmontese encampment far ahead.

About the author
