About this book
Waste Not, Want by Dave Dryfoos carries the teaser line Be a good little consumer, or the cops will get you. Fred Lubway is a mechanical engineer aged eighty-six, alone in a single bed in a house his Tillie had never seen. Tillie had been killed in a crash well over a year earlier.
The Ration Board's bright young female explains, right after Tillie's funeral, that the home must be changed because of the change in family composition. A chubby young ration-cop in a pea-green uniform demands Fred's papers and says You're not doing your share of consuming. A cop takes a firm grip on Fred's right biceps and says You've got to come along with me till your outlook changes, Mr. Lubway.
