About this book

A strange light above rain-soaked mountain woods interrupts a late evening in the cabin of Tobe Gryce, the county ranger. His wife Eugenia, her outspoken mother and their small children make up a household marked by Tobe's temper and the little girl's surprising authority over him. When he rides away, the women return to questions about Eugenia's marriage and the choices that brought her to Lonesome Cove.

Charles Egbert Craddock builds this mountain tale from domestic exchanges, regional speech and close attention to the winter landscape. A footprint on a ledge later unsettles the ranger, whose fear of being watched follows him into the stable with his mare. The contrast between ordinary cabin routines and threats beyond the door gives readers a tense story of family relations and suspicion in an isolated community.
