Three very different Englishmen, a wealthy widower, a sharp-tongued surgeon, and a stubborn clergyman, are shipwrecked on a remote South Sea island. There they find two figures sealed in crystal coffins, alive but sleeping for a quarter of a million years. The waking of Oro, a god-like ruler from a vanished civilization, and his daughter Yva forces the men to confront a power that could unmake the modern world. Haggard mixes lost-world adventure with romance, theology, and a grim look at human folly, written in the shadow of the First World War.
