About this book

Three very different Englishmen, a wealthy widower, a sharp-tongued surgeon, and a stubborn clergyman, are shipwrecked on a remote South Sea island. There they find two figures sealed in crystal coffins, alive but sleeping for a quarter of a million years. The waking of Oro, a god-like ruler from a vanished civilization, and his daughter Yva forces the men to confront a power that could unmake the modern world. Haggard mixes lost-world adventure with romance, theology, and a grim look at human folly, written in the shadow of the First World War. It is one of his stranger late novels, closer to science fiction than to the African tales that made his name.
