About this book
Young Mr. Barter's Repentance is credited to David Christie Murray, who is also named as author of Aunt Rachel and The Weaker Vessel. A character named Mr Bommaney is described as a British merchant of the highest rectitude and the most spotless reputation who traded still under the name of Bommaney, Waite, and Co. The text shows a clerk passing a card through the space between the door and door-jamb, and Mr. Bommaney taking it from his fingers without revealing himself.
Mr. James Hornett softly closes the door and stands on the landing, and the text has him asking whether something is wrong and whether Mr. Bommaney is in tears. An old man says his boy believes he is guilty, like the rest, and also says that Phil might help him. Barter urges Mr. Bommaney to tie him, saying that he has been the ruin of Barter and that Barter should have been an honest man if it hadn’t been for him.
