About this book
Schwartz: A History is by David Christie Murray. The narrator opens with the words I was expatriated by a man with an axe, and says the man and the axe were alike visionary and unreal. The narrator describes having work on hand that imperatively demanded to be finished, and being so broken down by a long course of labour.
The narrator is followed by a featureless, shadowy figure and tells it silently, Your name is Nerves, and you live in the land of Mental Overwork. The narrator tramps the follower up and down the pier in the keen salt wind for half an hour, with the gusty wind coming up from the Firth of Forth, and the follower shadows the narrator unshrinkingly. Janenne is on the outskirts of the Forest Country, and in the shooting season the chasseur is a familiar personage. The narrator picks up the returned wanderer in both hands, carries him into the hotel scullery and gets milk for him.
