Se aqui podesse vir Camões, nestes instantes, Da campa onde repousa ha já tresentos annos, Se aquella rude mão que fulminou tyranos

E sustentou crueis batalhas de gigantes,

Podesse ainda agitar em crispações vibrantes

O velho Portugal de heroicos puritanos;

E visse como o altivo estandarte das quinas

Tremula esfarrapado ao riso do estrangeiro,

As terras de alem-mar vendidas a dinheiro,

A patria toda em lama, em trevas, em ruinas,

As grandes tradicções no fundo das sentinas

E o soluço final d'um povo aventureiro;

Elle, o immortal poeta, e velho combatente,

Sonoro coração cheio de amor e gloria,

Alma toda febril, vastissima, marmorea;

O guerreiro fatal que, erguendo um bravo ardente, Escreveu co'a espada o livro auri-fulgente

Onde em lettras de luz fulgura a nossa historia:

Nesse instante talvez, espectro desolado!

Chorando amargamente o seu velho paiz,

E não vendo da gloria o fulgido matiz

Engrinaldar emfim o nosso lar sagrado,

Deixava-se outra vez morrer abandonado

Batido de vergonha, extatico, infeliz!

Mas contra toda essa atroz miseria hodierna,

Vibrae sonoramente! ó almas de leões,

E ergamos todos nós, em nossos corações,

Ao clarão triumphal da religião moderna, Um sacrario febril de immensa luz eterna,

Em que o Futuro adore o vulto de Camões.
