Elizabeth Andoh is an American-born culinary educator and writer who has spent decades interpreting Japanese food culture for English-language readers. Kibo grew from the aftermath of the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan. Published by Ten Speed Press in 2012, the digital cookbook combines recipes from the Tohoku region with essays about local traditions, recovery, and the determination expressed by the Japanese word kibō, or hope. Dishes include regional soups, seafood preparations, rice, stocks, sauces, and sake pairings, making the book both a culinary record and a tribute to affected communities. Andoh founded the Tokyo-based A Taste of Culture program and has written about Japanese cooking since 1980, including Washoku and Kansha. Her work emphasizes technique, seasonality, ingredients, and the cultural setting of everyday meals. In Kibo, that approach preserves food knowledge while connecting cooking to memory, regional identity, and rebuilding after disaster.
