Frederick Philip Grove shaped Canadian prairie writing through fiction, essays, teaching, and close observation of rural travel. Over Prairie Trails, published in 1922, records repeated winter journeys between Gladstone and Falmouth, Manitoba, and turns difficult roads, weather, and landscape into reflective prose. This volume gave public form to experiences Grove had already described in periodicals and lectures. Consider Her Ways appeared in 1947 and represents the later speculative side of his fiction as a late work. Its manuscript history includes the alternate titles Go to the Ant, Thou Sluggard and Man, His Habits, Social Organization and Outlook. Read together, the two works show Grove moving from the physical demands of prairie life toward an imagined examination of human society. His wider career continually kept western Canadian experience at its center.
