Frank Tuttle
Frank Tuttle writes humorous fantasy built around working magicians, unusual partnerships, and problems that cannot be solved by power alone. Mallara and Burn follows a Royal Sorceress who patrols the Five Valleys with Burn, her bodiless assistant, through stories first published in fantasy magazines and later collected as On the Road. Wistril Compleat gathers three adventures featuring Wistril of Kauph and his sharp-tongued apprentice Kern. Wistril is a White Chair wizard whose oath prevents offensive magic, so wit and misdirection become essential whenever mercenaries, monsters, or unwanted guests disturb Castle Kauph. The two collections share Tuttle’s preference for professional magical duties and comic friction, yet their central pairs work differently: Mallara and Burn are colleagues on patrol, while Wistril and Kern are an irritable master and capable apprentice. Both exact titles sit outside Tuttle’s better-known Markhat sequence and show the lighter, traditional-fantasy side of a bibliography that also includes darker mysteries and steampunk adventures.
