Huw Lemmey

Bad Gays started in April 2019 as a fortnightly podcast in which Huw Lemmey and Ben Miller took one complicated queer figure from history per episode and declined to tidy any of them into role models. The book of the same name, Bad Gays: A Homosexual History, was published by Verso in 2022 and won that year's Goodreads Choice Award for history and biography. Lemmey is a novelist, artist and critic based in Barcelona. His fiction includes Chubz, the political satire Red Tory, and Unknown Language, issued in 2020 under the joint names of Hildegard of Bingen and Lemmey, with an opening story by Bhanu Kapil and an afterword by Alice Spawls. He writes criticism for the Guardian, Frieze, Tribune and Art Monthly, sends out the essay series Utopian Drivel, and has shown work as an artist and filmmaker at the ICA and the Design Museum in London. Miller, his co-author, is a writer and researcher in Berlin who sits on the board of the Schwules Museum.
