Matthew Walker

Runs a sleep laboratory at Berkeley and wrote the book that made sleep deprivation a mainstream health anxiety.

Why We Sleep argues that short sleep is causally implicated in Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity and early death, and it changed a great many bedtimes.

It should be read alongside the criticism. In 2019 a researcher published a detailed audit finding factual errors, a misrepresented graph and claims stronger than the cited studies supported, including the assertion that no disease exists in which sleep is not implicated. Walker corrected some points. The underlying science that sleep matters enormously is not in dispute; the certainty of some specific claims is.
