About this book
Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, first published in 1994, is a book about stress by Robert M. Sapolsky, a biologist at Stanford University. Its third edition carries the subtitle A Guide to Stress, Stress-Related Diseases, and Coping. Sapolsky's starting point is that for animals such as zebras, stress is mostly short and linked to real danger, whereas humans can set off the same body responses with worries about the future, money or status.
He explains in plain language what happens in the body when stress goes on for a long time, including the effects on the heart, digestion, immunity and memory, and what research suggests about managing it.
