About this book

Dark woods, an abandoned house and an autumn pasture give Robert Frost's poems their first points of contact with the world. In A Boy's Will, landscapes become places where speakers consider solitude, attachment and the difficulty of being understood. "My November Guest" gives sorrow a companion's voice, while "Love and a Question" places a weary stranger at a bridegroom's door. The changing weather carries emotional weight, from the pressure of a snowstorm to pleasure in spring flowers.

The collection also turns toward ordinary work and shared experience. In "Mowing," the sound of a scythe draws attention to the satisfaction of labor; in "Going for Water," a search for a brook becomes a playful evening among trees. Short lyrics combine close attention to plants, birds and sounds with reflections on friendship, belief and personal choice. Readers interested in how a familiar rural scene can hold an unsettled thought will find that connection throughout these poems.
