About this book

Colour, sound and changing light carry much of the feeling in Amy Lowell's early verse collection. Its sections bring together lyrical poems, sonnets, a piece on the Boston Athenaeum and verses for children. The opening moves from an offering at an altar to a bird pictured on a volume of Keats, then to golden apples, spring blossoms and the blue flash of birds along a road.

Objects and landscapes become ways of thinking about devotion, artistic work and passing time. A Japanese wood carving evokes waves and seabirds inside a quiet room, while the middle excerpt sets church light against darkness and follows a storm into evening. The range of verse forms lets readers compare Lowell's close attention to visible things with her more inward poems about longing and creative purpose. Short nature pieces and reflective sonnets offer distinct points of entry into the collection.
