A Collection of Farces and Other Afterpieces is a multi-volume anthology of the short comic plays of the Georgian theatre, selected and edited by Elizabeth Inchbald (1753-1821), the actress, playwright, and novelist who was also the leading dramatic editor of her generation. After her success with the twenty-five-volume British Theatre, the publisher Longman engaged Inchbald to edit the standard farces and afterpieces, the short comedies that followed the main play on every Georgian evening’s bill. The collection preserves the working repertory of Drury Lane, Covent Garden, and the Haymarket: pieces by Garrick, Foote, Murphy, O’Keeffe, and their fellows that are otherwise hard to find. The anthology is a primary source for the performance culture of the eighteenth-century London stage. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
