About this book

Hannah Ann Underhill is just past seven, a quiet girl who goes on sewing her patchwork while she weighs her father's question: how would she like to move the whole family from their farm at Yonkers to New York? She takes her time, as her great-aunt taught her, and sets the city's museum, its omnibuses and its sociable-looking houses against the orchard, the meadows and the creek.

Douglas wrote this in 1896 for a young reader of her own day, and she fills it with the small details of an older city: the Tea Water Pump, milkmen carrying cans on a yoke, chimney sweeps, the Collect pond where Canal Street now runs. Aunts, cousins and parents describe the town as they remember it, and the chapters move through a Christmas, a party, a play in the backyard and a walk among the old landmarks.

It is a gentle family story about a large household and its youngest member, and a pleasant way to see how people lived and spoke in a much earlier New York.
