About this book
A Strange Story is by Edward Bulwer Lytton. The speaker asks whether he could have foreseen that a satire so justly provoked would inflict so deadly a wound. The speaker asks, what though Dr. Lloyd himself might be a worthy and honest man, and a sincere believer in the extravagances for which he demanded an equal credulity in others.
The speaker says the public knew nothing of his opponent's deathbed accusations and knew only that he had attended him in his last moments. The text says that Lilian's face grew visibly paler, even in that dim light, and that she said, I know not, almost in a whisper. The speaker asks whether it is the catalepsy in which life is suspended, but consciousness acute.
