About this book

Dickory Cronke, The Dumb Philosopher, or, Great Britain’s Wonder, gives a faithful and very surprising account of how Dickory Cronke, a Tinner’s son, in the County of Cornwall, was born Dumb and continued so for Fifty-eight years. The long title adds that some days before he died he came to his Speech, with Memoirs of his Life, and the Manner of his Death. The text says the papers come from a large bundle of papers, most of which were writ in shorthand, and very ill-digested.

The narrative says Dickory Cronke was born at a little hamlet, near St. Columb, in Cornwall, on the 29th of May, 1660. One passage says a man whose speech had entirely vanished, and who was again in his original state of dumbness, took his pen as formerly and wrote to his sister.

Daniel Defoe

Four books here, and only two of them were signed. Robinson Crusoe appeared in 1719 as the account of a mariner of York, written by himself, and readers took that literally for a while.
