About this book
Dwellers in Arcady, The Story of an Abandoned Farm, is by Albert Bigelow Paine, and the list of his books places Dwellers in Arcady under those for grown-ups. Mr. Westbury waves a sort of salute to an astonishingly big fireplace in a long, low room, its opening, which included a Dutch oven, fully seven feet wide. Mr. Westbury says that the room was the kitchen in the old days, where they cooked over the fire and baked in that oven.
Hans and Gretel fell as a monopoly to Lazarus, and the narrator says they were no longer pigs but turning into ant-eaters, their bodies appearing to have doubled in length and halved in bulk. The narrator's garden has an accompaniment in the brook, whose voice, all the year through, was a lilting undertone while the seasons ran away to the thread of its silver song.
