About this book

Fallen Fortunes has a contents list that names, among others, On the Field of Ramillies, Hartsbourne, The Scheming Kinsman and A High-born Dame. The chapter headed On the Field of Ramillies has a speaker tell Dicon that they are in luck's way at last. Marlborough listened with keen interest to Grey's account of his journey through Savoy, his interview with Victor Amadeus, and his successful feat of carrying important dispatches into Turin.

Marlborough says graciously to Mr. Dumaresq that he has indeed been smiled upon by Dame Fortune. The man Wylde speaks the words, Welcome to the Lion's Den, as he throws open the door of a room which he had unlocked. A tall and narrow house in Harpe Alley, leading from Shoe Lane, is the house some characters had entered a few minutes before.
