About this book

A traveler ventures into the deserts north of Guinea, hoping to discover a fertile place hidden among the sands. A violent storm carries him into danger, but he wakes to the sight of a green plain filled with unfamiliar plants and animals. There he meets the Prefect of Giphantia, an island inhabited by elementary spirits. The Prefect explains that he protected the traveler during the storm and offers to show him the island's wonders. Charles-François Tiphaigne de La Roche turns this imaginary voyage into a meeting between human curiosity and supernatural knowledge.

Published in English in 1761, the novel combines fantastic discoveries with reflection on human habits. In one scene, the traveler samples fruit and water transformed by specially prepared salts into the tastes of rich dishes and wines. His delight leads into observations about elaborate cookery, luxury and ambition. Readers interested in early speculative fiction can find a distinctive blend of invented wonders, philosophical conversation and social satire.
