About this book

A quiet September walk leads Arthur Lawford into the old churchyard at Widderstone, where sunlight, birdsong and weathered inscriptions gradually give way to unease. Still recovering from illness, he broods over his ordinary life and pauses beside the grave of Nicholas Sabathier. The scene follows his wandering thoughts closely, until familiar surroundings seem charged with hidden attention and an unreasonable fear.

Later, a strained conversation with his wife, Sheila, reveals a household struggling with a strange personal crisis. She avoids looking at him, while he hopes sleep or a medical explanation might put things right. Left with a mirror and a volume of a medical dictionary, Lawford searches for accounts of memory loss and divided personality. This novel builds its unsettling atmosphere through inward reflection, tense dialogue and the uncertain boundary between illness and something stranger. It offers readers a study of how fear can unsettle both personal identity and domestic trust.
