About this book

A letter from the Solway shore interrupts Andrew Johnstone's quiet camp beside a Canadian lake. An injury has ended his hopes of an army career, and the outdoors has become his refuge. Now Elsie's concern for his cousin Dick revives a promise Andrew made to the older man who brought him up. Harold Bindloss links this family obligation with an adventure set around the Scottish border.

The coastal landscape gives the novel much of its tension. In one nighttime episode, Andrew and his American companion Whitney struggle through heather, cross cold tidal sands and search a stranded wreck by matchlight. Andrew's injured knee, the uncertain channels and the turning tide make every movement count. Readers drawn to practical outdoor action will find a story shaped by difficult ground, close observation and the pull of loyalty to family.
