About this book

Dishonest business dealings become a matter of conscience in John Bunyan's account of Mr. Badman. Told through a conversation between Mr. Wiseman and Mr. Attentive, the narrative examines a life through Christian moral teaching. Bunyan's preface says that the conduct he describes draws on things he has observed, bringing his warnings into the world of households, neighbours and everyday transactions.

The discussion of unpaid debts shows how closely practical obligations and religious judgment are connected here. Badman's treatment of his creditors leads to an argument about deliberate deception, responsibility and the harm done by borrowing without the means to repay. Scriptural references frame the speakers' reasoning throughout the passage. Readers interested in Bunyan's prose or the history of Christian ethics can see how a story about one person's behaviour expands into a sustained examination of social trust.
