About this book
Making the House a Home is a book by Edgar A. Guest. The account describes building a home for the last fifteen years, one that will not be finished for many years to come. The speaker dates the start of this home-building job to June 28th, 1906, with Mother.
The speaker says that building the home was all going to be done on the splendid salary of twenty-eight dollars a week. The speaker describes a wonderful, brand-new flat that could be rented for twenty-five dollars a month, with hardwood floors, steam heat and two big bedrooms. The speaker recalls those who suggested that he and Mother were too young to adopt a child, and says they decided that they needed Marjorie, and Marjorie needed them. The text states a hope that what may be just a house to many shall be, in the speaker's words, "to us" the home they have been building for the last fifteen years.
