About this book

From an Abbey cliff, Earl Raincy surveys his estates and broods over the neighbouring land held by the Ferris family. His grandson Louis has heard the grievance many times and wants something more useful to occupy him. He argues for practical work, questions the habits of his family, and soon spots Patsy below through his telescope. The opening brings an old dispute over property into contact with the impatience and affections of a younger generation.

S. R. Crockett's historical love story combines this landscape of castles, farms and coastal paths with lively personal disagreements. Later, Louis struggles with Patsy's treatment of him and the arrival of a prince. Miss Aline offers blunt advice: Patsy wants a man who can stand his ground. Scots dialogue gives their conversation its particular rhythm, while Louis's hurt feelings make the exchange both comic and earnest. Readers interested in historical love stories will find family pride, romantic uncertainty and arguments about what makes a person worthy of respect.
