About this book
The Baz-nama-yi Nasiri is presented as a Persian treatise on falconry, with a section on yellow-eyed birds of prey and short-winged hawks used in the sport. The account calls the sparrow-hawk the boldest and most powerful of the short-winged hawks used in falconry, relative to its size. The speaker reports frequently seeing sparrow-hawks, especially eyesses, “bate” at hares, but says that courage failed when it came to releasing a bird to discover the result.
The instructions warn against flying a young sparrow-hawk in haste and recommend careful familiarisation if the bird is intended for large quarry. The training directions require the bird to learn to come to the lure or fist.
