About this book

Carley Burch reads an Arizona letter against the noise and movement of New York. Her fiancé, Glenn Kilbourne, returned from France with damaged health and memories that changed their relationship. Now he describes a cabin among red canyon walls and pines, where he spends his days outdoors and can chop wood again. His renewed strength comes with an altered view of city life. Carley's wish to see him grows as she tries to understand what the West has given him.

Published in 1924, Zane Grey's novel places a love story beside the lasting effects of the First World War. The opening moves between Carley's memories of Broadway at New Year and Glenn's account of quiet surroundings in Arizona. Their correspondence makes differences in money, work and expectations part of the engagement. Readers drawn to Western fiction will find the landscape tied closely to a veteran's recovery and to the difficulty of sharing a future after profound personal change.
