About this book

In The Château of Prince Polignac, the text says few Englishmen or Englishwomen are intimately acquainted with the little town of Le Puy. The text calls the town the capital of the old province of Le Velay, which in these days is called by the imperial name of the Department of the Haute Loire. The text says that within a narrow valley there stand several rocks, rising up from the ground with absolute abruptness, and that the town clusters round two of them.

The text calls a peak the Rock of the Needle, and says that on its very point a church sacred to St. Michael has been erected, accessible by stairs cut from the stone. The text names the rock of Espailly and says a castle with its own legend stands on its summit. Mrs. Thompson, immediately on receiving the announcement, found that she had no answer to make, and the text says it was not that she was angry with M. Lacordaire for being a tailor.
