About this book
The Draw is credited to Jerome Bixby. The opening note says stories of the old West were filled with bad men who lived by the speed of their gun hand, and introduces Buck Tarrant, who could outdraw them all. A narrator named Joe Doolin works for old Farrel over at Lazy F beyond the Pass.
Buck is described as a bony runt of about eighteen, with bulging eyes and a wide mouth that was always turned down at the corners, who got his nickname Buck because he had buck teeth. Buck lives with his ma on a small ranch out near the Pass, and the place is falling to pieces because he wouldn't lift a hand to do any work around, and his ma just couldn't handle him at all. In a bar, Buck tells Menner he can put a bullet right where he wants to, and the mirror behind the bar has a spiderweb of cracks radiating from a round black hole.
