The Fatal Boots

The Fatal Boots is a book by William Makepeace Thackeray. The contents list headings such as "THE BIRTH OF THE YEAR" and "CUTTING WEATHER", among others. A narrator says that some poet has observed that if any man would write down what has really happened to him in this mortal life, he would be sure to make a good book. The narrator claims adventures that are most singular, pathetic, and unparalleled.

A written account addressed to Eliza says that dear Tom is an excellent nurse, and that many and many a night he has had no sleep in consequence of the poor little baby. The text offers an infallible maxim to guide you through life: IT'S AS EASY TO GET A RICH WIFE AS A POOR ONE. In the part headed JULY, SUMMARY PROCEEDINGS, the narrator says that Dobble's reputation for courage was not increased by the butcher's-dog adventure, while the narrator's own stood very high: little Stubbs was voted the boldest chap of all the bold North Bungays.
