About this book
William Makepeace Thackeray wrote The Fitz-Boodle Papers. The contents list names Fitz-Boodle's Confessions, with a preface, Dorothea and Ottilia among others, and Fitz-Boodle's Professions, with a first and a second profession. The preface is a letter from George Fitz-Boodle, Esquire, to Oliver Yorke, Esquire, dated May 20, 1842, whose writer says he has always been considered the third-best whist-player in Europe.
The narrator confesses that he is a smoker and says that the cigar is a rival to the ladies, and their conqueror too. The chapter headed Ottilia in Particular says some kind critic will, doubtless, have the goodness to point out that the simile of the Mediterranean heath is applied to two personages in the chapter, Ottilia and Dorothea. A quoted passage says in a word that there is no city on earth's surface so well supplied with fish as London.
