About this book

The Surgeon's Daughter is a work by Sir Walter Scott, from Chronicles of the Canongate. The introduction says the tale of the Surgeon's Daughter formed part of the second series of Chronicles of the Canongate, published in 1827. The contents list a preface and a conclusion in the name of Mr. Croftangry.

In one scene Mr. Croftangry is offered a cup of tea, and Mr. Fairscribe asks whether he will wait and take part of a Presbyterian supper. In another scene complaint and pain are hushed as Seelencooper makes his rounds, and Richard Middlemas says, I hope your humanity will make you attend to what I say. The text says orders were given that on the next day all should be in readiness for the Sowarree, a grand procession, when the Prince was to receive the Begum as his honoured guest at his pleasure-house in the gardens.
