About this book

Before the starship Pleiades leaves Earth, its four crew members are already arguing. Cleander Garlock, James, Belle and Lola bring powerful mental abilities aboard an experimental craft whose destination cannot yet be controlled. Corporate officials doubt the project, and the crew’s confidence in one another is scarcely steadier. When the new drive carries them beneath unfamiliar stars, finding a way home becomes a problem that scientific credentials alone cannot settle.

E. E. Smith combines speculative machinery with telepathic exchanges, sharp personal friction and action on an interplanetary scale. The later excerpt places the crew in a coordinated struggle against invading spacecraft near an inhabited world and its moon. Technical discussions sit beside arguments about leadership, skill and endurance. Published in 1959, the novel offers readers of space adventure an unusually contentious team, with the challenge of cooperation running alongside the larger challenge of navigating unknown space.
