About this book

Carl Ericson first appears at eight years old, sulking in a dark woodshed in Joralemon, Minnesota, in October 1893, ordered to pile wood and dreaming instead of soldiers and hunting across the lake. He is the son of a Norwegian carpenter and a farm-bred mother, and Sinclair Lewis presents him as an average young American of the immigrant Middle West, restless for whatever lies beyond the hills.

Published in 1915, the novel is divided into three parts and follows Carl from a back-yard childhood toward a grown-up life of motion. By the middle of the book he is an aviator called Hawk Ericson, keeping a terse diary of an aerial derby over New York, rough currents above the Harlem River and an uneasy romance with Istra, a red-haired art student who misses Paris.

Lewis subtitled it a comedy of the seriousness of life, and the tone fits: warm, teasing and observant about small-town Minnesota, the children of Scandinavian settlers and the early days of flying. It is an early novel by a writer later awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and his ear for American talk and types is already sharp.

About the author

Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885 to 1951) was an American novelist famous for skewering the conformity and hypocrisy of small-town and business America in the 1920s. His run of major novels earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, the first awarded to an American.
