About this book
The Lost Child by Henry Kingsley was republished in 1871 with illustrations by L. Frölich. A short preface says the story is left untouched apart from the first two paragraphs and the last short one, and it explains a few Australian words, among them quantongs, a bush fruit, and the bunyip, the native river devil.
The story begins with a speaker telling someone addressed as General that no words ever passed between Sam Buckley and Cecil. The captions of the pictures hint at the scenes: a question to a mother about what country lies across the river, a kangaroo, a snake and an eagle, and a figure lost in the bush. One passage follows a child who turns back toward the river and cannot find the way, while magpies begin to tune up as the sun gets low.
