About this book
Walter Henderson's work copying his uncle's papers at the British Museum seems a poor substitute for the Army career he wanted. Then Professor Ambrose Wentworth offers him an expedition to Babylon. Months of studying inscriptions and Arabic prepare Walter for a confidential assignment: finding Queen Sophana's golden girdle, an ancient treasure associated with stories of unusual powers.
First published in 1908, A. F. Mockler-Ferryman's adventure places archaeological clues beside the practical hazards of travel across Mesopotamia. Walter tells the story himself, with a rueful account of his early frustrations and growing enthusiasm. A later caravan episode turns attention to the treatment of prisoners, as Walter objects to their suffering and Edwards arranges care for a sick man. The combination offers readers a treasure quest with an interest in friendship, responsibility, and the difficult choices made along the road.
