About this book
The Unprotected Species is by Melvin Sturgis. A line under the title describes a chill, terrifying planet inhabited by furtive gnomes and asks what is forcing the crew into violent insanity. Four members of the surveying section bring in Bradshaw early on the first morning after the camp had been secured, while Gallifa, the senior biologist of the party, is loading the halftrack in preparation for a field trip.
Gallifa argues that it doesn't sound right and asks whether Bradshaw wasn't scared half to death by something, adding that a man sometimes does some funny things if he's scared. A messenger reports that some of the boys ran into Samuels over on the edge of camp, and Gallifa asks whether his whole team is going crazy. Gallifa says the men can probably destroy the gnomes, reminds the listener of the rabbits in Australia, and says the gnomes are ecologically basic, by far the most numerous animal in this area.
