About this book

Evening falls on a convent cell where Julian struggles to feel the presence of God. Sunlight and chapel music briefly reach him, but prayer brings little comfort. Brother Robert offers company while reporting the stories other monks tell about Julian's withdrawal. Written as a dramatic poem, the book gives these inward struggles a speaking voice through dialogue, songs and closely observed images of light and sound.

Later scenes place spiritual longing beside ordinary work and family feeling. In a merchant's countinghouse, Julian reflects on daily toil, the beauty of nature and the hope that sorrow can carry. Lilia sings of childhood and lost parents, while her daughter Lily discovers old toys and asks her mother to stay with her. Readers interested in religious verse can follow how faith, affection and the need for companionship meet in intimate conversations and solitary reflection.
