About this book

Art and secret knowledge meet in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1842 novel, which places Rosicrucian lore alongside questions about love and human feeling. The opening dedication to the sculptor John Gibson praises an artist working beyond commercial demands and rivalry. That concern with the life of the imagination carries into a story of mysterious powers, alchemy and beings whose existence extends beyond ordinary experience.

The introductory discussion contrasts Mejnour, an immortal figure devoted to intellect, with Zanoni, who retains the capacity for affection and sorrow. Elsewhere, a talkative adventurer recounts his dismissal from a notary's household in Naples, his time aboard a merchant ship and his entry into a pirate crew. These shifts from spiritual speculation to dangerous worldly adventures give the novel its unusual range. Readers interested in nineteenth-century occult fiction will find both symbolic ideas about human attachment and the lively voices of people pursuing fortune.
