Hollywood learned the trade in his father's bakery on Merseyside and worked as head baker at hotels including the Dorchester before any of the television. 100 Great Breads appeared in 2004, six years ahead of The Great British Bake Off, which made him the judge whose handshake the contestants wanted. When the programme changed channels in 2016 he was the only one of the four who went with it, and it cost him a certain amount of goodwill. In 2019 photographs surfaced of him in a wartime German uniform at a party sixteen years earlier, and he apologised for it. The bread instruction has never been the part anybody disputes.
