About this book

Borrowed passage money, no savings, and a promise to take the first honest work she could find: that is how May Kellogg Sullivan went north from California in the summer of 1899. Her record covers two trips, eighteen months and over twelve thousand miles, made almost entirely alone. She takes the Yukon steamers to Dawson and walks up unannounced to the father and brother mining there, then runs the river down to St. Michael and the crowded beach camp at Nome. Returning in 1900, she cooks for a gang of miners on Anvil Creek at five dollars a day, then winters at Golovin Bay, earning her board by teaching two children, and sets down bar-room fights, sickness, burials, a Christmas in the dark and the staking of her first gold claims. Published in Boston in 1902.
