About this book

Steve Tolman has borrowed his father's big six-cylinder touring car without asking, driven a crowd of schoolmates fourteen miles toward a football game, and broken down at the foot of a hill just short of Torrington. His friends walk off to the match and leave him alone by the road, wondering how he will face his family. Sara Ware Bassett opens her 1921 novel with that small, very human scrape, and the question of owning up is never far from Steve's mind.

Mr. Tolman is a railroad official, and his talks with his son become stories of how steam changed travel: the first railroad, the clipper ships, the river steamboats. A holiday trip to New York brings fresh trouble, including a lost pocketbook full of securities, a detective at the door and a quiet lesson in honesty.

Written as the second volume of The Invention Series, after Paul and the Printing Press, the book suits young readers who like engines and history told through a lively family story.
